Puerto Rico sits in the south west corner of Gran Canaria and is rapidly developing into one of the top destinations for tourists visiting from overseas.
Like many resorts across the Canaries, Puerto Rico was once a small fishing port that has turned into a vibrant destination for those who want to enjoy some sun – with the impressive conditions all year round meaning you people flock to Puerto Rico no matter whether it is peak or off season.
Suitable for couples and families alike, the resort features a varied selection of accommodation options, range from five star hotels to apartments and villas for those who prefer to go self-catering.
A man made beach in the heart of the resort is ideal for those who want to top up their tan, whilst a short walk away is the Blue Flag beach at Amadores – which sits alongside a selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
As well as enjoying a range of watersports, the water off the coast is popular with those who want to go deep-sea finishing or who want to go whale watching having plenty of opportunity.
Nearby there are also waterparks that are perfect for families and the dunes of Maspalomas are also just a short trip away.
It’s worth noting that Puerto Rico as a resort is far from flat, meaning it might not be the ideal option for those with limited mobility.

Deep sea fishing
If you’ve ever fancied trying your hand at deep sea fishing then you’ll have the chance on a trip to Puerto Rico. You can board a boat to head out to see in an attempt to make a catch whilst you’ll also be able to gain an alternative view of the impressive coastline.
Dolphin watching
The waters around Puerto Rico are also another good place on Gran Canaria to try and spot dolphins, with the possibility of also spotting some whales if you are lucky at the same time. You’ll need to make sure you have your camera ready to grab a snap to remind you of the experience if they break the surface of the water.
Embrace the sunshine.
Puerto Rico is known to be one of the best places on the island to top up your tan with plenty of sun and high temperatures for much of the year. The golden sands of the main beach are the best place on which to make the most of the weather and lead to calm waters where you can take a refreshing dip when you need to cool off.
Dine at the marina
The marina area isn’t just the place to catch a boat if you want to enjoy one of the various excursions that are available from Puerto Rico, it’s also a great place to dine thanks to the various restaurants that line the harbour. Although you can expect to sample all manner of dishes, fresh sea food is a speciality.
Explore the Maspalomas dunes
Backing onto the beach in Maspalomas around half an hour away is the famous dunes that make up the Maspalomas Natural Park. On the back of a camel is a great way to explore the desert-like landscapes whilst you could also pay a visit to the lagoon on the edge of the dunes that is home to various rare species of birds.
Dance the night away
Playa del Ingles is one of the top party destinations on the island of Gran Canaria so there is no shortage of options when it comes to a night out. Head for the Kasbah Centre and you’ll find various night clubs whilst there are plenty of bars where you can dance to live music whilst enjoying a drink. It’s around a 20 minute drive to get there from Puerto Rico.
