Albufeira sits in the heart of the Algarve and as a result, has become of the most popular destinations for visitors who book a break in Portugal for their HOT Holiday in the sun.
A relatively short trip from the airport, Albufeira is like many modern day resorts in that it was once a small fishing village that has expanded and grown through the years to become the modern day resort that is today.
The resort benefits from impressive weather conditions throughout the year, with the summer days featuring plenty of sun and temperatures that can nudge into the 30s, whilst even in the middle of winter it can still reach into the 20s – albeit with the chance of the odd shower.
Suitable for lone travellers, couples, families and groups alike, modern-day Albufeira is regarded by many as being the resort that really put the Algarve on the map when it comes the tourist industry.
As well as the cobbled streets of the old town, where there are plenty of intimate bars, romantic restaurants and small cafes waiting to be explored, there is also a stunning selection of beaches both in and around the resort.
Without going too far, you can access the two main beaches and relax on Blue Flag rated sands, whilst there are more than 20 smaller beaches running for some 30km along the coast.
What that means is that there is plenty of space for everyone to make the most of the chance to top up their tan, with options available if you want to escape the crowds.
If you are travelling with children, or are young at heart yourself, then there is a waterpark within the resort and the most popular theme park on the Algarve, Zoomarine, is also nearby.
With plenty to do on an evening along the main strip when the sun goes down, including the option to dance until it’s coming back up again, as well as international cuisine aplenty, the appeal of Albufeira is clear to see.

Zoomarine
The Zoomarine park is located near to Albufeira and is the ideal place to head if you want to enjoy fun with the family. The park is open throughout the main season and offers a range of different activities, with a zoo, waterpark and a selection of rides all on site.
Marina
The area around the marina is a good place to grab a bite to eat or to relax with a drink, thanks to a varied selection of bars and restaurants. There is also plenty of opportunity to book onto an excursion on one of the many boats that will be bobbing along on the water.
Old Town
The Old Town of Albufeira is located alongside the seafront and is popular with tourists who want to take a stroll through the cobbled streets. Visit one of the many restaurants that offer a range of cuisine to suit all budgets or visit when the sun goes down to find plenty of relaxed bars where you sit with a drink. There are also numerous shops in which you can hunt for souvenirs.
Fisherman’s Beach
There are plenty of beaches around Albufeira but Fisherman’s Beach is one of the most popular. Sitting in the heart of the resort alongside the Old Town, the beach offers impressive golden sands that lead into stunning blue waters, with plenty of shops and restaurants on the adjoining promenade.
Paderne Castle
Located to the north of Albufeira, Paderne Castle dates back to the 12th century and is believed to be one of the castles that shares the shield on the Portuguese flag. Having been resorted many times, the castle was finally abandoned in the 1850s and the isolated remains can now be accessed for free for those who want to explore some of the history of the area.
Sant’Ana Church
Dating back to the 18th century Sant’Ana Church is located in Albufeira’s Old Town area and is one of the most popular historical attractions in the resort. The white-washed monument is certainly worth a visit and is open daily, except when services are being held.
The Strip
If you want to make the most of the nightlife in Albufeira then The Strip is the place to go. Here there are plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as clubs where you can dance until the early hours of the morning.
Retail Therapy
If you are looking for bargains to take back home then there are plenty of options during a break in Albufeira. As well as the small shops throughout the Old Town, there are larger designer stores and a selection of markets that run on a weekly basis – where you can haggle with stall holders for the best price.
