Travel to Nassau with us

Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and sits on New Providence, which is one of more than 700 islands that make up the Caribbean country.

As is the case in destinations across the islands, one of the main selling points for anyone planning to visit Nassau is the opportunity to visit the beach - with various stretches of sand where you can make the most of the weather conditions, and also enjoy various water-based activities.

These can include trips out onto the clear blue waters in a bid to spot dolphins, to snorkel on the surrounding reefs or - if you prefer to stay dry - to board a submarine that will allow you to explore beneath the surface.

Away from the beaches, a visit to Nassau provides plenty of chances to discover more about the history of both the city, and the Bahamas as a whole.

Fort Charlotte, which overlooks the harbour area, dates back to the times when the Bahamas were a British colony, whilst Fort Fincastle on the top of Bennet’s Hill is also worth a visit.

Built back in the 1700s, the fort is accessed via the Queen’s Staircase, a set of steps hand-carved from limestone by slaves in the 18th century.

Other historical buildings within the city include the Cathedral, the Bahamian Parliament and the library.

You’ll be able to sample traditional island cuisine at what of the many eateries across Nassau, whilst a trip to the Straw Market on Bay Street will give you the chance to barter for the best deal on a selection of hand-made goods.

Nassau is also linked to nearby Paradise Island by bridge, and here you can see another side of life in the Bahamas, with the island being home to the Atlantis Resort - one of the premier hotels in the country.

Things To Do

Ardastra Gardens

The Ardastra Gardens is the only wildlife conservation centre in the whole of the Bahamas, and is best known for a flamingo breeding programme that has been in place since the 1950s. Sitting in the heart of Nassau, the gardens cover four acres and are home to a range of other species beyond the flamingoes - which include macaws, snakes and turtles.

Atlantis Resort

The Atlantis Resort is open to day visitors who want to make use of the various facilities, which include the Aquaventure Water Park. The water park is home to a range of different attractions, with slides and lazy rivers that are suitable for visitors of all ages.

Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte was built by the British in order to help defend the Bahamas against attack from the Spanish, although it was never actually used in battle. Built in the 18th century, the fort is located close to the centre of Nassau and can be explored on various special tours.

Pirates of Nassau

The Pirates of Nassau is an interactive museum located in Old Nassau, which allows you to go back to the early 1700s and experience what life would have been like as a pirate in days gone by.

John Watling’s Distillery

The Caribbean is famous for rum and a visit to the John Watling Distillery is a great place to visit if you fancy a taste whilst in Nassau. You can take a tour of the distillery to see how its small batch rum is produced and can then head for the tavern to sample a range of cocktails.

Queen’s Staircase

Although not a major tourist attraction as such, the Queen’s Staircase is one of the more historic locations in Nassau that you are likely to visit, located near to the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex. The staircase dates back to the 1790s when it was built by slaves, and would later be named after Queen Victoria.
