Freeport sits on the island of Grand Bahama, which is located little more than 50 miles away from the coast of mainland Florida.
One of the latest cities in the Bahamas, Freeport is home to the suburb of Lucaya, which is the primary destination for tourist and the home to a number of top class hotels and resorts.
One of the main draws of Lucaya is the impressive beaches, which are amongst the best on Grand Bahama. Here, you can lie back and enjoy the sunshine, with plenty of bars nearby where you can grab refreshments.
There is also a range of water sports available in the surrounding area, with jet skiing and scuba diving being particularly popular in the reefs that line the coast.
You might also take up the chance to swim alongside dolphins, whilst the more adventurous could even be given the opportunity to partake in dives where you can feed sharks.
Those who are staying on dry land might want to sample some Caribbean cuisine in one of the local restaurants, head for the market in search of a bargain or could leave the resort behind to explore the wider island.
The Lucayan National Park, which can be accessed with ease from Freeport itself, is well worth a visit if time allows as is The Garden of the Groves.
Lucayan National Park
The Lucayan National Park was created to help protect one of the largest underwater cave systems in the world. Two of the caves can be visited by the public – although swimming in the water is prohibited - whilst the stunning stretch of sand at Gold Rock Beach is also within the park limits.
Garden of the Groves
The Garden of the Groves is home to a network of trails that wind their way through luscious vegetation. You’ll pass by stunning waterfalls and fountains as you listen to sounds of birds singing in the surrounding trees, whilst there are also a range of garden shops, a cafe for lunch and a playground for children.
Taino Beach
Taino Beach is an impressive stretch of sand close to Freeport, which is lined by palm trees. The picturesque location is a great place to relax by the water or to sample traditional Bahamian cuisine from the collection of beachfront restaurants. It’s a particularly impressive place to visit at night, when a number of fires are lit on the beach.
Paradise Cove
Paradise Cove is a great place to visit if you want to enjoy a water-based adventure, with the chance to sample a range of water-based activities - which include snorkelling, paddleboarding and kayaking. There is also a large beach on which to take in the sun and a collection of places where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
Bahamian Brewery
The Bahamian Brewery is one of two breweries on the islands and produces a range of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The brewery hosts various events around Freeport where you can sample the different drinks whilst tours have traditionally been available.
UNEXSO
UNEXSO offers various aquatic experiences, including the chance to go swimming with dolphins or to dive alongside sharks. Glass-bottomed boat trips give a taste of the experiences without the need to actually take to the water.
