Calella is another Costa Brava resort that is very much focused on the beach, and is perfect for a laid-back break HOT Holiday in the sun.
Half an hour away from Barcelona, the resort revolves around a number of impressive Blue Flag beaches that long drawn in visitors who want to make the most of the weather conditions.
No matter what the time of year, you can expect to enjoy plenty of sun – particularly during peak season when the average temperatures will regularly run into the high 20s.
Choose the right week in the summer months and temperatures could well break into the 30s – which will only serve to enhance the holiday experience.
The beaches around Calella run for a 3km stretch along the resort, with Gran Playa being the main option for tourists. Here, there is plenty of space to lie back and enjoy the favourable conditions.
You can also take a refreshing dip in the inviting waters off the coast, where snorkelling is a popular activity, or head along the promenade to visit the various bars and restaurants.
Those with a desire to explore the history of the resort will enjoy the fact that many of the older buildings across Calella are still in place, giving visitors the chance to see what the resort used to be like in the olden days.
In fact, there is plenty to reward those who head down the narrow streets of the old town, with a range of bars and shops sitting amongst the historical buildings.
Within the newer areas of the resort you’ll find clubs and discos that provide the evening entertainment; showing why the resort is well suited to couples and families alike.
As with other Costa Brava resorts, a trip to Barcelona is possible if you want to explore the city, whilst there is plenty more to see and do within easy reach of Calella, with family friendly waterparks, historical monuments and local vineyards just three things that may appeal.
Waterworld
Given how popular Calella is with the family market, it will come as no surprise that nearby Waterworld is one of the top attractions. Less than half an hour away on the edge of Lloret de Mar, Waterworld is one of Spain’s most popular waterparks and offers fun for all ages, from huge high speed slides like Kamikaze for thrill seekers to waves pools in which to relax and splash pools for the children.
Barcelona
You can’t be this close to Barcelona and not pay a visit to the Catalan capital, which remains one of the top destinations in the world. Whether you elect to spend just a single day in the city or make a few trips, there is plenty to see and do. Check out some of the historical and cultural sites, hit the stores for some designer shopping, enjoy some fine dining or even catch a game in the famous Nou Camp.
Calella Lighthouse
The lighthouse in Calella dates back to the 1850s and is now one of the most famous symbols of the resort. Sitting at the end of the main beach, the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the both the resort and the surrounding landscapes and is open throughout the year.
Church of Santa Maria
Santa Maria Church is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture that you will find in Calella. Although the original building dates back to the 16th century, renovation work has been needed through the years although the original entrance still exists to this day.
Dalmau Park
Even when you’ve headed to Spain to catch the sun, there will be a time when you want to take a break in the shape, and Dalmau Park is a good place to head if that’s the case. Created in the 1920s by Jeroni Martorell, the park covers just over 18 acres and features various gardens and walks, as well as play areas for children.
Municipal Museum & Market
If you want to explore the history of the resort then this small museum is the place to go, housing a range of artefacts that date back to what Calella was first formed. After a trip round the museum, you can then head for the nearby market, which is open from Tuesday through to Saturday and sells a range of different goods.
Carrer de l’Esglesia
One of the main streets in the resort, Carrer de l’Esglesia is where you’ll find the main boutique shops and traditional restaurants within Calella. Expect to find plenty of tapas whilst seafood is also popular with both locals and tourists alike.
Festival time
Calella is home to a number of festivals every year and La Minerva in September is one of the biggest of the lot. Expect to find plenty of live music, fireworks, parades and traditional paella galore; offering a true taste of Spain.
