Alicante is one of the major cities on the Costa Blanca and provides the opportunity to combine a break on the beach with oodles of history and culture.
Founded thousands of years ago, Alicante is seen by many as the gateway to the Costa Blanca but you’d be doing the resort a huge injustice if you were to overlook it as a holiday destination in its own right.
Across the city, there is the opportunity to explore the different cultures that have left their mark on Alicante during the years, with the Old Quarter being somewhere you’ll find plenty of attractions that are simply waiting to be discovered.
That’s before you even consider the fact that Alicante sits in a coastal position and can therefore offer the chance to relax on some of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca.
With favourable weather conditions throughout the year, with temperatures running into the 30s during the summer months, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to lie back on the sand and top up your tan.
When the sun goes down, Alicante is a fantastic place in which to enjoy a night out, with a buzzing evening scene – particularly around the popular marina era – that runs until the early hours.
It’s not all about the adults however, with plenty to keep children entertained for those who are enjoying a HOT Holiday with their family.
You’ll find theme parks, assault courses and even have the chance to take a stroll down a city street that doubles as a giant playground – providing the chance to enjoy some fun on the go.
With plenty more to do in the surrounding area, and with accommodation available to suit all tastes and all budgets, perhaps the time has arrived to consider Alicante for your break in the sun…
Alicante Marina
The marina in Alicante is the place to go if you want to embrace the finer side of life during your break in the sun. Alongside the stylish yachts bobbing in the water, there is a wide range of entertainment options that are open both through the day and into the evening, with a selection of bars and restaurants as well as nightclubs where you can dance until late. Unsurprisingly, seafood is a popular cuisine available in the marina area.
El Palmeral
If you want to spend some time away from the heart of Alicante, then the park at El Palmeral could be the ideal option for spending a few hours enjoying some peace and quiet. Take a stroll amongst waterfalls, lakes and palm trees with the family and embrace the scenery.
Castle of Santa Barbara
You can’t really miss the Castle of Santa Barbara, which sits on Mount Benacantil overlooking the city. Believed to date back as far at the ninth century, the castle has been open to the public since the 1960s and those who pay a visit will be rewarded with stunning views over the city and the surrounding coastline.
Guadalest Valley
Located around an hour north of Alicante, Guadalest Valley provides some of the most impressive scenery in the area, with stunning mountains surrounding a deep blue reservoir. You’ll be able to take in the views on the drive there and on arrival can pay a visit to a small castle and jail that sit in a village where you can shop for traditional souvenirs.
Calle de Las Setas
Located in the heart of the city, the Calle de Las Setas is home to a number of shops and bars, but this isn’t the main reason why you might want to pay a visit. Instead, the attraction comes from the fact that recent investment has made the street a vibrant playground for children who dance around giant toadstool figures installed by the local council, tackle the small slides and play a game of hopscotch.
Volvo Ocean Race Museum
Alicante is home to a number of museums that explore the history and culture of the city, but as an alternative, the Volvo Ocean Race Museum gives an insight into the famous round the world sailing race. Located in the port area, the museum features a range of immersive activities and also gives the chance to explore a boat that took part in the actual race.
Mount Tossal
Mount Tossal is home to a popular park where the chance to play is order of the day. A range of family friendly activities are available such as mini-golf, with plenty of space in which to take a stroll and a cafeteria in which you can grab a quick bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
Playa de San Juan
There are a number of beaches around Alicante, but the Playa de San Juan is perhaps the best known. The stretch of fine wide sand runs for some seven kilometres along the coast and is the perfect place to relax in the sun, with a selection of bars and restaurants to be found on the promenade near the city end.
