The fishing village of Alvor is on the estuary of the river Rio Alvor. Although the earthquake in 1755 wiped out most of the area, you can still see the remains of the original village in places such as the 16th century Igreja Matriz, with its beautiful Manueline arches and pillars. The charm of the old town still remains, with narrow cobbled streets leading down to the harbour on the estuary.
