Kalamaki has a long, sandy beach that is an extension of Laganas Bay. The sea is crystal-clear and shallow, making it ideal and safe for children. Kalamaki beach is the breeding ground for the famous Caretta Caretta sea turtle. The female lays her eggs on the beach in July/August and 8 weeks later, the babies hatch and scurry to the moonlit sea. Powered water-sports are not permitted in the area and tourists are not allowed on the beach after sunset during the breeding times.
