Grand Canal

It’s hard to imagine going to Venice and not taking to the water for a ride along the famous Grand Canal on a traditional gondola. Part of the city wide network of waterways, a trip on the Grand Canal provides a fascinating way in which to see many the most famous historical sites – including the Rialto Bridge.

Doge’s Palace

Doge’s Palace is an impressive gothic building that was once the residence of the Doge of Venice – the leader of the city through until the late 1700s. The stunning building is now home to a museum and you can head inside to marvel at the lavish chambers and the quarters where the Doge would have once lived.

St Mark’s Basilica

St Mark’s Basilica is the main cathedral church in Venice and a stunning example of Byzantine architecture. Famed for its opulent design, the church sits next to Doge’s Palace and is one of the top attractions for visitors to the city who want to marvel at the impressive artwork to be found inside.

The main square in the heart of Venice, St Mark’s is the place to go if you are visiting the city for the first time, with plenty of bars and restaurants to visit and live music to be enjoyed most evenings. Many of the top attractions can be found nearby, such as St Mark’s Basilica and the attractive Clock Tower.

Gallerie dell’ Accademia

There are plenty of museums within Venice and one of the top ones is Gallerie dell’ Accademia, which is dedicated to pre-19th century art and sits on the banks of the Grand Canal. Expect to see some of the top works from Venetian artists of years gone by if you pay a visit.

Venetian Seafood

Venice is home to some top quality restaurants and seafood is a speciality of the city. Alongside the classics, you’ll be able to sample plenty of local treats such as spider crabs and sea snails, whilst chicchetti – a tapas style dish that features seafood, egg and vegetables – is also widely available.

Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal, with the present bridge dating back to the 1500s. A popular attraction in its own right, the bridge is known for its intricate design and has become one of the most visited sites in the city.

Wine Tour

Venice is known for Prosecco so it would be rude not to sample some whilst visiting the city. Take a special tour out to the surrounding region and you’ll be able to visit wineries and vineyard where the very best Prosecco is created – and of course can sample the produce at the same time.
