Trinidad and Tobago sits off the coast of Venezuela and is located to the south of the Caribbean.
Generally regarded to be part of the West Indies, the two main islands - Trinidad and Tobago - are joined by a number of smaller islands and whilst tourism isn't regarded as a primary industry as it is in some other areas of the Caribbean, it is still a destination that is well worth considering for a break in the sun.
The capital city - Port of Spain - is located on Trinidad and this is the island to head for it you plan to visit during the early part of the year when the carnival season is in full flow - with the city being home to bustling markets, a busy port and towering sky scrapers that reflect the fact that Trinidad is one of the more prosperous parts of the Caribbean.
By contrast, life moves along at a much slower pace on neigbouring Tobago where things are much more relaxed and there is the chance to explore more of what most people would say is the 'traditional Caribbean'.
Here, you can enjoy exploring the natural landscapes, sample diving off the coast and taste local delicacies freshly produced by the locals.

Pigeon Point Beach

Fort King George
Located near to Scarborough, Fort King George was built by the British to help guard against attack from the French in the 18th century and the remains of the fort are now one regarded as a site of special historical interest. Two cannons that once defended the bay are a major draw. Within the fort is a small museum that includes tales about the impact of slavery on the islands.
Buccoo Reef
There are plenty of places in which you can try your hand at diving on the coast around the two islands, with the protected reserve of Buccoo Reef being one option where you can get closer to the different species of tropical fish that are to be found below the surface.

Carnival
The Trinidad and Tobago carnival is one of the big events in the Caribbean and takes place on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. The two day event is packed with parades and music as people come together for one huge party.
