If you want your HOT Holiday ‘Down Under’ to be a somewhat relaxed affair then South Australia is probably a region you should consider when deciding where exactly you want to go.
There are plenty of things to see and do across the state, from the sights around the state capital Adelaide to the beauty and splendour of the wide-open countryside.
South Australia as a state benefits from relatively good weather no matter what the time of year may be – making it a solid option for a break in both summer and winter.
Head for the state in the summer month through November to March and you can expect to see the temperature running into the high 20s and even in winter, the high teens aren’t uncommon – albeit with more chance of also encountering some rain during your trip.
As with a trip to any of the different Australian states, one of the main places to visit is the capital Adelaide.
It’s a great place to explore the history and culture of the region, particularly if you head for the impressive Central Market where you can embrace the impressive produce that has come from the surrounding countryside.
The area around Port Adelaide is also worth visiting thanks to the many 19th century buildings that reflect the maritime history of the city – with plenty of bars and hotels dating back as far as the 1830s
You can also further explore the multi-cultural nature of the city by checking out the dining scene, where you can sample a range of different food and drink from around the world.
Travel further afield and you might want to explore the South Australia coast, head for the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, take in stunning views from the volcanic landscapes around Mount Gambier or the Flinders Ranges or visit Kangaroo Island off the coast where some of Australia’s native animals can be found in abundance.
With the chance to then hit the road to head for the Red Centre and explore the famous Australian Outback, South Australia is also a fantastic place to start a trip across the vast country.
In short, it ticks plenty of boxes no matter what you want from your trip.

Things To Do
Adelaide Central Market
Adelaide Central Market is a great place to head if you want to sample the very best produce from South Australia and is one of the top attractions in the state. The market itself dates back to the 1860s, with the first stone being laid to create the current landmark building in 1900. It’s certainly worth a visit if you want to tickle your taste buds with some top quality Australian fare.
National Motor Museum
The National Motor Museum is located in Birdwood, around an hour away from Adelaide. It helps to share the stories of some of the vehicles that have shaped Australian motoring history whilst other iconic machines are also on display – including a rare Bugatti Veyron.
Barossa Valley
Easily accessible from Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is famous around the world for producing top quality wine – with Shiraz being one of the top exports from the region. Penfolds Grange and Jacob’s Creek are two of the brands you might be familiar with that come from the Barossa Valley region.
Kangaroo Island
The third largest of Australia’s islands, Kangaroo Island is easily accessible from the mainland via a ferry that sets sail from Cape Jervis to the south of Adelaide. Much of the island is made up of protected areas with kangaroo, wallabies, sea lions and seals amongst the wildlife you can expect to see. Special nocturnal tours also provide the chance to possibly spot Little Penguins.
Lake Eyre
Lake Eyre is the largest lake in Australia on one of the rare occasions when it finds itself completed filled with water, and is also the lowest natural point in the country. The protected lake is important area for birdlife and there are various ways in which you can head out to explore the salt plains that to be found most of the time – with significant levels of rain only falling every few years.
Adelaide Oval
The Adelaide Oval is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque grounds in world cricket, but is also used for a variety of other sports. Opened back in the 1870s, the stadium has hosted test cricket since 1884 and offers daily tours that given the chance to go behind the scenes. A special museum has also been opened on the site.
Glenelg
Glenelg is a suburb of Adelaide where you can hit the beach if you want to spend some time relaxing in the sun during your time in South Australia. It’s also a good place to book a trip out to sea where you might be lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming in the water.
Mount Gambier
One of the largest towns in South Australia outside Adelaide, Mount Gambier is famed for the many volcanic and limestone features that are found in the surrounding areas. The Blue Lake, a crater lake with a depth of more than 240ft, is well worth a visit as is the Engelbrecht Cave system.
