If you want to enjoy some sunshine on the Pacific coast then a trip to San Diego is one that you would certainly be worth considering for your next holiday Stateside.
One of the largest cities in the state of California, San Diego is sometimes referred to as 'America’s Finest City' and there are any number of reasons to back up the argument.
For a start, the city - which has something of the European vibe about it - benefits from favourable weather conditions for a large part of the year, with more than 300 days of sun and relatively low levels of rain.
That makes it a fantastic destination to visit no matter what the time of year may be, with San Diego far from just a summer city.
As with most of the major cities within the USA, different areas of San Diego have their own unique flavour which means there is something for everyone to enjoy.
On the one hand, there are plenty of world famous attractions and important historical sites waiting to be explored during the day whilst when evening comes, you can spend time enjoying the many trendy bars and restaurants that line the streets.
Stunning stretches of beach are also close by, whilst a trip to San Diego offers easy access to some of California’s main wine growing areas for those who want to head outside the city limits.
San Diego Zoo
Opened back in 1916, San Diego Zoo is one of the top attractions in the city and is now home to more than 3,500 different animals representing well over 600 different species. The zoo, which is well known for its conservation efforts, is the most visited zoo in the USA and contains a raft of different exhibits that have been created to recreate the natural habitats of the animals within.
Balboa Park
Balboa Park is one of the most iconic urban parks in the USA, and is the home to San Diego Zoo alongside a collection of museums - which include the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Art and the San Diego History Centre. With shops and restaurants alongside areas of open green space, it’s a great place to head for some time away from the busy city streets.
Old Town
If you want to explore the history of San Diego going right back to colonial times, then the Old Town is the place to head. Here, you’ll find plenty of buildings dating back to the 19th century, be able to sample traditional cuisine that showcases San Diego’s early Mexican heritage, hit the shops to purchase goods that reflect the colourful past of the city and be entertained by performers who hit the streets to show their talents.
Craft Beer Tours
California is well known for wine, but San Diego also has a thriving craft beer scene, with the city being home to a large number of breweries. Special tours are the best way to fully appreciate what is available - and means you’ll be able to sample plenty for yourself…
La Jolla
La Jolla is one of the leading beach destinations in California and is home to some of San Diego’s top hotels as well as various tourist attractions, a number of leading shops and top class restaurants. If you want to relax in the sun or sample some watersports, this is the place to go.
LEGOLAND
Located just outside San Diego in Carlsbad, LEGOLAND California was the first LEGOLAND park to open outside Europe and is a great option for anyone visiting the city with children in tow. The park features more than 60 different attractions that are geared mainly towards those aged twelve and under, whilst there is also a water park and an aquarium on site.
USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum is a historical aircraft carrier docked in downtown San Diego which was turned into a museum after ending its time in active service with the US Navy. As well as being able to take a tour of the ship, there is the chance to explore an extensive collection of different aircraft, many of which were built in the California region.
SeaWorld San Diego
Located within Mission Bay Park, SeaWorld San Diego opened back in the 1960s and is home to dozens of exhibits showcasing marine life from all corners of the globe.
