Not everyone wants to head for the beach when it comes to a HOT Holiday in the sun, and if that applies to you, then why not consider Marrakech for your annual break away from home?
Located to the north of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is one of the largest cities in Morocco and offers a fascinating blend of the old and new for visitors to embrace.
With a flight time of around four hours from the UK, Marrakech provides an interesting alternative to the likes of Barcelona, Rome and Amsterdam for those who want to spend their time away from home in a big city.
The old comes from the many historical buildings that are located around the city, many of which are red in colour thanks to the mixture of red mud and water that are used on their construction.
It means that visitors to Marrakech are treated to a kaleidoscope of colours from the moment they arrive, which only serves to add to the experience.
When it comes to the new, there is a range of trendy bars and restaurants, as well as the various hotels that have been built in recent years to cater for the ever-increasing number of visitors.
It’s hard to know where to start with Marrakech, with no two visits to the city ever being the same.
As soon as you hit the streets you can expect to find performers showing their talents before reaching bustling souks where you can find all manner of locally produced and traditional goods.
The many impressive gardens that are spread across the city are also well worth a visit, whilst heading further afield means you could take a day trip to the stunning Atlas Mountains or even add in a beach break at the popular seaside resort of Agadir.
Jemaa el-Fna
The largest city square in Africa, Jemaa el-Fna is also one of the busiest – so much so that it would make a trip through Piccadilly Circus appear to be a walk in the park. You won’t know where to look with the bustling market being home to all manner of goods, whilst don’t be shocked to see snake charmers, musicians and acrobats doing their thing.
Hit the markets
You can’t miss the markets when in Marrakech so why not embrace the experience and enjoy the unique opportunity to barter for a deal in a traditional souk. You’ll be able to pick up all manner of goods across the city, from food and drink to spices, leather goods and woodwork.
Visit a Hammam
Another traditional experience to enjoy whilst in Marrakech is a visit to a hammam – or public bath house. Here, you can undergo a spa treatment that will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Atlas Mountains
Head away from Marrakech into the Atlas Mountains and you’ll be able to enjoy some of the most dramatic scenery that Morocco has to offer.
Stunning gardens
Away from the bustling markets, the green gardens across Marrakech provide the chance to get away from the crowds. Jardin Majorelle, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, is amongst the most popular.
Busy nightlife
Despite being an Islamic city, Marrakech is more laid back than some other Moroccan resorts so there is plenty to do on an evening. You could relax with a drink, make the most of the impressive restaurant scene or even catch a show at the theatre.
