Acropolis
The Acropolis is one of the most visited attractions in Greece, never mind just within Athens, and dates back to ancient times. Towering over the city below, the acropolis is home to a number of buildings that are of huge historical importance, with the huge marble structures that still exist being a reminder of the lavish city that once stood in the same place. A museum houses a range of treasures from the Acropolis.
Parthenon
One of the major draws in the Acropolis the Parthenon is an ancient temple that was dedicated to the goddess Athena and dates back to 432BC when construction was completed. Seen as a symbol of Ancient Greece, the Parthenon has undergone extensive restoration work in an effort to combat erosion and ensure it continues to stand for many more years to come.
Plaka
If you want to embrace the culture of Athens then a visit to the district of Plaka is a must. Here, there are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can make the most of Greek hospitality, whilst a range of boutique stores provide the chance to seek out souvenirs to take back home.
Hephaestus
The Temple of Hephaestus is a well-preserved temple dating back to ancient times that is located on the Agoraios Kolonos hill. Until the 1830s, it was still used as a Greek Orthodox church and is one of the most best examples of architecture from its era.
Odeon of Herodes Atticus
The stone theatre sits on the slopes of the Acropolis and was renovated in the 1950s having been destroyed in around 270AD. The outdoor theatre now hosts a range of events throughout the year, with the likes of Sting, Elton John and Andrea Bocelli having held concerts in the theatre in recent years.
Temple of Poseidon
Located within easy access of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon sits in a picturesque location on the tip of the Attiki Peninsula looking out across the ocean. It’s a fantastic place to go if you want to catch a stunning sunset, whilst the small beach is great for a refreshing dip before heading back to the city.
