Agadir is arguably the most popular destination for a holiday in Morocco, and once you pay a visit, you’ll realise why…
Sitting on the Atlantic coast close to the edge of the Atlas Mountains, Agadir is perfect for a HOT Holiday in the sun and offers plenty for lone travellers, couples and families alike.
The modern day resort, built after an earthquake in the 1960s destroyed most of the original city, benefits from impressive weather conditions throughout the year – which is just one of the big selling points.
In total, there is more than 300 days of sunshine with the best conditions coming in the summer months, when the temperatures will run into the 30s.
A sea breeze however helps to make sure it doesn’t get uncomfortably hot as you laze under the bright sun and clear blue skies.
The other major draw of a break in Agadir is the beach, which is one of the best to be found anywhere in the country.
The golden sands stretch for nearly 10km along a wide sweeping bay and there is no surprise in the fact that they have been given a Blue Flag rating to reflect the high standards.
As well as being the perfect place to relax, the beach is also the place to go if you fancy trying your hand at a selection of different watersports.
Despite the fact that modern day Agadir is still relatively new – compared to many other Moroccan destinations at least – there is ample opportunity to embrace local history and culture, with bustling markets and traditional restaurants that serve first rate Moroccan cuisine.
Be aware however that if you’re looking for a busy night out then you’ll be spending the evenings around your hotel as, whilst there are places to relax on an evening, the fact that Agadir is an Islamic resort means you won’t find the huge number of bars you’d expect to see if staying in Europe.
Crocoparc
The Crocoparc in Agadir provides fun for all the family from the moment you enter the reception area through a giant crocodile mouth. Once inside, you can stroll through impressive botanical gardens to check out the various crocodiles that live in specially created sections of the park.
Harbour
Head for the harbour area and you’ll find a range of different restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat, or numerous boats you can use for a day trip out to sea. There is also a selection of shops, some of which will be familiar from back home.
Hit the golf course
In amongst the sand dunes, you’ll find a range of golf courses around Agadir that are perfect for those who fancy taking in a round during their holiday – including Golf du Soleil, which once hosted the Moroccan Open.
Taroudant
Taroudant is an ancient walled city located close to Agadir that is famed for its market, where you can purchase a range of traditional goods or ride around the streets on Morocco’s answer to the horse and carriage.
Massa Nature Reserve
If you want to spot wildlife then a day trip to the Massa Nature Reserve will tick plenty of boxes. Around 40km away from Agadir, the reserve is home to a wide range of different birds who come together around the calm waters and sand banks – with flamingo and osprey being regular visitors.
Paradise Valley
Explore some of the best scenery in the region on a visit to Paradise Valley, where you can admire stunning waterfalls, take a dip in clear blue rivers and sample traditional Moroccan goods that have been locally produced.
Bag a bargain
Shopping is one thing you’ll want to embrace in Agadir, with the resort being home to a number of traditional souks where you can pick up all manner of goods. Be prepared to barter with the sellers if you want to secure the best deals.
Celebrate a festival
There are plenty of festivals held in and around Agadir every year so there is a good chance you may be able to catch one during your time in the resort. The main festival takes place in December and is a celebration of everything Moroccan – running for four days with a mixture of food, music and crafts to enjoy.
