Having looked at the virtues of a trip to the romantic city of Venice and the historic surroundings of Budapest, two of our count down of the Top 10 European city breaks continues with the next two cities on our list.

As with Venice yesterday, our two selections today are well known for water…

8: Amsterdam

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is famed for the elaborate canal network that winds between buildings packed with charm and character unlike anything seen elsewhere.

The city is packed with things to see and do, so it’s little surprise that Amsterdam is so popular with anyone looking to enjoy a weekend break away from home – particularly given how accessible it is from the UK.

For those who want to let their hair down, Amsterdam is packed with bars and famed for its vibrant nightlife, with areas like Leidseplein and De Wallen – the Red Light District – being particularly popular.

Anyone who would prefer to study the history and culture of the city won’t be disappointed either, with attractions like the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum, Rembrant House and Anne Frank House being particular popular.

You could elect to pay a visit to the Heineken Brewery and museum, seek out a bargain at one of the various street markets or simply explore the many city squares and marvel at the impressive architecture of buildings like the Royal Palace and Centraal Station from on foot.

If anything, a weekend simply isn’t long enough to fully appreciate everything that Amsterdam can offer…

7: St Petersburg

Russia may not spring to mind immediately when considering a weekend break, but then again, St Petersburg isn’t really your average city…

Situated on the edge of the Baltic Sea, St Petersburg is regarded as the cultural capital of Russia and contains so many historical attractions that its centre earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Arguably the main attraction is the Hermitage; a museum that is one of the largest – and oldest – to be found anywhere in the world. Such is the size of the museum that it is spread across a complex of buildings in the heart of the city alongside the famous Palace Square.

The fact that artwork from the likes of da Vinci, van Gogh, Monet and Gaugin can all be found within the Hermitage make the city a popular choice for lovers of the arts. However, with more than 200 museums covering a wide range of different topics, there really is something for all tastes.

Those who visit the city can also embrace a large number of buildings that showcase architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a trip along the Neva River or through St Petersburg’s own canal network providing the ideal chance to see everything the city has to offer.

With the chance to sample the best Russian cuisine and to shop in the best designer stores, it’s an interesting alternative for a long weekend away.
