Although it only comes in at number four on our list, it’s no exaggeration to say that there are few cities out there that can beat Rome when it comes to history, heritage and culture.

The Italian capital is jam packed with things to see and do, with an interesting history that dates back thousands of years being reflected in the stunning architecture to be found at every turn.

Structures like the Colosseum, the Pantheon and St Peter’s Basilica are instantly known around the world and are amongst the most visited attractions although you only need to take a stroll through the city streets to be greeted by impressive architecture from across the years at every turn.

The influence of some of the world’s greatest artists is also clear to see, from sculptures from Michelangelo to masterpieces from Caravaggio and fountains from Bernini.

Aside from its historical delights, Rome is a major shopping destination given its position as one of the fashion capitals of the world, whilst there is ample opportunity to sample some of the best Italian cuisine at restaurants and cafes across the city.

3: Prague

History is also a major draw for the city that sits third on our list, with the Czech capital Prague having developed into one of the most popular European city destinations around.

Prague Castle, the Old Town Square and the Jewish Quarter are amongst the main cultural draws for anyone paying the city a visit, with architecture from a wide range of eras sitting side-by-side.

That ranges from buildings that show the best in Romanesque and gothic design through to unique, ultra-modern structures – such as the controversially designed Dancing House.

Lovers of the arts will enjoy the chance to visit Prague’s many galleries, whilst there are plenty of opportunities to sample the many beers for which the Czech Republic is famous in the cities bars – ranging from internationally acclaimed Budvar to new offerings from local breweries and microbreweries.

Known as the City of a Hundred Spires, Prague is a city of stunning beauty and one that rewards those with a desire to explore.
