Okay so first things first an apology.

We know it’s not Bonfire Night yet. We know it’s not even Halloween, but you can’t hide the fact that Christmas is coming and is going to be here sooner rather than later.

Aside from pulling the crackers and eating the turkey on the day itself, one tradition we enjoy every year is heading off to the various markets that spring up at the start of the festive period to do a bit of shopping, grab a bite to eat and sample a few different Christmas tipples.

But which markets should you consider if fancy a weekend away before Christmas arrives? We’ve put together a small selection that might help…

COLOGNE

You can find German markets springing up all over the place ahead of Christmas, but you can’t get much authentic than heading to Germany itself.

Running from 21 November through to 23 December, the markets in Cologne are one of the most popular and are held in various locations across the city, with the main market being situated close to the Cathedral.

As well as the chance to do some shopping, you’ll be able to sample a varied range of food and drink, enjoy live entertainment or head to the Heimat der Heinzel to try your hand at skating on the spectacular ice rink.

Another popular option for those who want to head to Germany for the markets is the capital city Berlin; with no fewer than 60 markets running from late November through the start of January.

The sheer number of markets means there is something to cater for everyone, from traditional handmade gifts through to things that are deemed to be more modern and ‘trendy’ for the youngsters.

Amongst the popular attractions is the Winter Wonderland in Potsdamer Platz where there is large toboggan run and a skating rink, the tented city of WeihnachtsZauber (entry charge applies) and the large fair of Wintertraum am Alexa near Alexanderplatz.

Head for Berlin in early December for three nights for just £145pp and explore the markets at leisure: https://www.traveltext.co.uk/offer/4754/5054

The markets within the Czech capital kick off on 26 November and run through to New Years Day.

A range of markets run across the city and help to create a true winter wonderland experience for visitors who are drawn in by the opportunity to not only do some pre-Christmas shopping, but also to embrace everything else the city has to offer.

The fact that the centre of Prague is quite compact compared to other European cities means you don’t need to journey far to really explore the markets; all of which are within easy walking distance of each other.

Whilst there, be sure to check out the local delicacies and the world famous Czech beers – you’ll only regret it if you don’t…

Taking place in the large Rynek Glowny square in the heart of the historic district, the market is the place to go for all manner of Christmas gifts, whilst there is also free entertainment, local artists displaying their crafts and the opportunity to savour a range of hot dishes.

Of course, a large mug of mulled win is also a necessity…
