Like anyone, we enjoy the opportunity to relax and have a laugh in front of the TV, so it was with a sense of sadness that we caught news of the passing of Andrew Sachs after illness at the age of 86.

The Berlin-born actor was best known around the world for his work on one of the greatest shows in British TV history; playing the bumbling Spanish waiter Manuel in twelve episodes of Fawlty Towers.

Amongst the famous catchphrases that Manuel would come out with as he struggled to learn the English language – continually frustrating John Cleese’s character Basil in the process – was the proud proclamation that ‘I’m from Barcelona’.

So with that in mind, we figured we’d spend our Friday looking taking a look at Manuel’s home city and to be honest, it’s hard to see why anyone would want to swap one of the top destinations in Spain for England’s south coast…

Although it’s not a city that everyone loves (travel writer Andrew Fraser for example describes it as the Camilla Parker Bowles to nearby Girona’s Princess Diana), there is plenty to see and do within the Catalan capital – either during a short weekend break or on a longer stay.

For those who love history and culture, Barcelona is certain to deliver in spades – particularly if you a fan of the renowned architect Gaudi.

From the stunning building that is the Sagrada Familia in the heart of the city to Park Güell, which overlooks the sights from high on Carmel Hill, there are signs of Gaudi’s impact on the landscape of Barcelona at every turn.

Both are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and they aren’t the only ones – with Casa Milà, Casa Batlló and Domènech’s Hospital de Sant Pau also worthy of further exploration.

That’s without even taking into account other famous structures like those that line the gothic quarter, the Magic Fountains and the Olympic Stadium within the Montjuïc district, and the many impressive museums – which include examples focused on art, history and archeology.

Add into the mix beaches, wide open parks, family themed attractions like Tibadabo and a huge array of shopping and dining activities and the options are almost endless when it comes to what to do within the city.

Flights to Barcelona are available from across the UK, with accommodation to cater for all budgets across the city.
