Do I want to go all inclusive or will half board do the job?

Does the hotel need to be 5*?

How close is it to the beach?

They’re all questions that most people tend to ask when they are considering where to go when they are on holiday, but most tend to relate to what we’d call a ‘normal’ hotel or apartment complex.

But how often do you think about staying somewhere that’s a bit different to the norm?

If that could be you, we’ve taken a look at a few options that might float your boat…

Spend the night in a retired airliner

If you are a fan of aviation, or simply fancy spending a night onboard a plane, then the Jumbo Stay Hotel could be the place for you.

Located at the airport in Arlanda, Sweden, the hotel is to be found within a Boeing 747-212B that once flew the skies with Singapore Airlines, Pan Am and Transjet.

Now, it’s home to 33 hotel rooms that have access to private and shared shower facilities, Wi-Fi internet access and flat screen TVs.

There’s also a café and bar onboard as well as a communal balcony area.

We thought we’d look at a few options when it comes to accommodation with a difference

Share breakfast with the wildlife

Giraffe Manor is a boutique hotel set in private land in the Langata suburb of Nairobi.

The iconic building, that dates back to the 1930s, offers guests the chance to choose from a selection of ten impressively styled rooms and a range of services – including complimentary chauffeured vehicles for sightseeing.

The one thing that stands out at the Manor however is dining time, when you might find yourself sharing food with some of the locals.

That’s because the resort is home to a herd of resident Rothschild Giraffe who tend to visit on a morning and evening and occasionally poke their necks through the windows in the hope of getting a treat from one of the guests.

Enjoy a cruise – on dry land

If you’ve always fancied a cruise holiday but aren’t too keen at the idea of spending so long out at sea then what about a cruise that never leaves dry land?

The Sun Cruise Resort is to be found in South Korea and overlooks Jeongdongjin Beach; a location that is regarded as having one of the best sunrises in the world.

There’s little doubt that the sight of a cruise ship on the top of a cliff is one to behold, but once you ‘step aboard’, you’ll find pretty much everything that you would find on the world’s top cruise liners.

Without doubt it’s a holiday experience that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

Cuddle up warm in an arctic igloo

There are few natural sights to match the beauty and majesty of the Northern Lights – and the best place to see them is to head towards the Arctic Circle.

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finland is home to some of the most iconic accommodation in the area, with images of its famous igloos having long drawn in visitors from around the world.

Glass roofed igloos are available throughout the Northern Lights season and are perfect for lying back and taking in the stunning views of the night sky whilst cuddling up with a loved one.

If you want to combine a log cabin with an igloo, you can even do that too with a selection of new pinewood lodges.

Alternatively, a night in a snow igloo is something you won’t forget in a hurry.

Sleeping with the fishes

Okay so if you watch a gangster movie, that’s something you really want to avoid, but in the real world, the opportunity to sleep surrounded by tropical fish is something afforded to a few lucky travellers.

Guests at Atlantis The Palm in Dubai are amongst those who have the opportunity to stay beneath the surface of the sea with a selection of Underwater Suites.

The luxurious rooms feature large windows that look out into the ocean, meaning that you can wake to the sight of tropical fish swimming by.

It’s hard to imagine finding a view that will match it anywhere in the world.
