Keen to make your money go further?
There’s little doubt that, with the current concerns over the economy as Brexit looms and Donald Trump prepares to enter the White House, value for money is more important than ever when it comes to your holiday to the sun.
But searching for the best deal is about more than just the initial cost of the actual holiday.
You also need to consider how much it’s actually going to cost you when you get to your chosen destination.
At the end of the day, it’s all well and good getting the cheapest possible deal on your flights and hotel, but that will count for little when you arrive if you then end up spending a fortune on the bits and pieces you then need.
With that in mind, the Post Office’s annual Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer is a good way in which to examine where you need to head if you want to stretch the cash.
The survey looked into the costs across 44 global resorts and cities of eight different items - 200ml of suncream, 50ml of insect repellent, a three course meal for two with wine, a bottle of beer, a can of coke, a 175ml glass of wine, a filter coffee and a 1.5l bottle of water.
The results showed that you are best off considering a short haul break if you want to get the most for your money, with nine of the ten cheapest options being within Europe.
The cheapest of all proved to be the Algarve, where the eight items listed came in at £33.36; slightly cheaper than Sunny Beach in Bulgaria.
They were one of only two destinations where the price was below the £50 mark, the other two being the Costa del Sol and Marmaris in Turkey.
Only Tokyo, at £58.47, prevented Europe locking out the top ten places.
At the other end of the scale, on a visit to Jumeirah in Dubai, you’d pay a total of £221.11 – more than six times more.
The top twelve can be seen in the infographic below, but it’s certainly something to bear in mind when making your booking.
