Okay, so we know that summer hasn’t really arrived yet, but we also know that most people like to plan ahead when it comes to their holiday.
With that in mind, we thought we’d put together a few options for those who are considering taking a break outside the traditional seasons and want to embrace some winter sun.
Let’s be honest, it’s not something you’re likely to enjoy here in the UK…
Gran Canaria
If you don’t want to travel too far in search of your winter sun then the Canary Islands are a pretty safe bet.
Gran Canaria offers average temperatures that will still be running into the 20s during the winter months and you can expect to enjoy up to nine hours of sun a day.
That year round sun is part of the island’s appeal and makes it one of the perfect options if you want to escape the drab and dreary conditions that are to be expected in the UK.
You could spend some time relaxing on the beach, visit water parks and zoos, partake in some retail therapy, dine in small and intimate restaurants or head inland to embrace some of the dramatic island landscapes.
And heading to Gran Canaria in the winter means you’ll also escape many of the crowds that would await in peak season…
Cape Verde
Slightly further afield than the Canary Islands is Cape Verde; the collection of islands located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Senegal.
As with the Canaries, Cape Verde benefits from a strong climate throughout the year, and average temperatures during the winter months can hit the mid-20s.
From November through to March, the levels of rain are also relatively low; meaning you won’t simply be swapping a downpour back home for one overseas.
Still something of a hidden gem, Cape Verde offers the chance to explore a number of impressive beaches, to head out to sea to marvel at a range of marine life, to stroll around colourful, traditional towns and to embrace an eclectic mix of cultures that come together as one.
Florida
Given it’s known as the Sunshine State, it should come as little surprise to see Florida featuring on the list of places you might want to consider if you are chasing some winter sun.
Although it will be cooler than some of the other options that are available, average temperatures in the mid-teens and up to seven hours of sunshine a day mean you will still be able the hit the beach – in stark contrast to other parts of North America.
Aside from the well known theme parks, a trip to Florida could see you embrace the bustling nightlife of Miami or head to Key West on the southern tip of the States where you can relax an embrace the Caribbean vibe that exists on the island.
Barbados
Whilst you can expect to find some rain in October and November, when December rolls around, things start to dry up in Barbados which makes the Caribbean island a popular destination for some winter sun.
The daytime temperatures can still push 30°C so it will come as little surprise that people tend to flock to the island if they are looking to spend the Christmas period away from home.
Expect to find stunning beaches, crystal clear waters and luscious landscapes at every turn, with impressive five star accommodation to match that found anywhere else.
The Maldives
The Maldives sit in the Indian Ocean and are famed for being a popular destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a luxurious break in the sun.
The winter months are actually some of the best when it comes to visiting the archipelago, with the dry season running from November through to April.
That means you can avoid the monsoon conditions that come earlier in the year and embrace the many hours of sun that take their place.
Luxury hotels situated on their own private islands are what the Maldives are famed for, so if you want that extra special winter sun break, there are few better options.
Dubai
An ever-increasing number of people are choosing Dubai as a holiday destination, and that isn’t just in the heart of the traditional summer period.
In fact, Dubai is becoming one of the go-to places for those who want some winter sun, thanks to the high temperatures and climate that allows those who visit to bask in the sun and top up the tan.
There is plenty to keep the whole family busy, from water parks and malls in the heart of Dubai itself to traditional souks and the stunningly beautiful deserts that are just a short trip away.
Head to Dubai through the festive period and expect to also enjoy a range of special events in the vast majority of the many hotels.
