Sitting on the south shores of Oahu, Honolulu is the largest city in the state of Hawaii and features a melting pot of different cultures that have been drawn together to create a colourful and cosmopolitan destination for overseas visitors.
Hugely popular with tourists, the city is home to a number of major attractions that include the Bishop Museum - which is dedicated to the study and preservation of Hawaiian history - as well as the Museum of Art and the Iolani Palace.
The latter is only official royal residence anywhere in the United States having been the home of the final two Hawaiian monarchs. Having undergone extensive renovation work after years of neglect, the palace opened to the public in the 1970s and has been a popular attraction ever since.
Other famous attractions include the Aloha Tower down on the harbour, a retired lighthouse that has become a symbol for the island of Oahu, as well as Kawaiahao Church - which was built in the 1800s from coral slabs hauled from the ocean and is the first Christian church on the island.
With Pearl Harbor located nearby, it is somewhat apt that Honolulu is also home to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - which is the final resting place for more than 50,000 veterans.
You’ll also have easy access to a number of impressive beaches - including those at Hanauma Bay, Waikiki and Kuhio Beach - whilst a trip out of the city to hike to Diamond Head will result in the chance to take in some of the best views in the area.
With no shortage of dining establishments and a vast array of shopping options - from busy malls to small markets - there is plenty to keep you busy during your time in the city.
