It’s been another big summer of sport, with the World Cup in Russia having been the standout event that has enthralled people across the globe.
The event also provided thousands of people with the opportunity to visit a country that wouldn’t usually have featured on the top of the list for a summer holiday.
Although the main focus was understandably on watching a match, visitors to the World Cup were also able to discover some of the various delights that Russia has to offer – with many afterwards expressing surprise over the whole experience of visiting a country that isn’t renowned for its tourist scene.
Whilst they don’t come much bigger than the World Cup, there are numerous sporting events that take place across the globe every year so we thought we’d put together a list of some of those you might want to try and visit as part of your annual overseas adventures…
Football:
If you are a fan of the beautiful game then there are plenty of places that you might want to consider for a trip to foreign shores.
In some cases, a trip might be based around the activities of your favourite club but a city break is something that will hold huge appeal for those who simply love the sport.
The likes of Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Rome, Lisbon and Munich are home to some of the most famous clubs in world football and you can easily factor in a trip to iconic stadiums like the Nou Camp, the Bernabeu or the Stadio Olimpico whilst embracing the sights.
Many of those stadiums feature museums that tell the stories of the respective clubs that call them home, which are sure to interest general fans who want to factor a bit of footie into the time away from home.
You don’t even need to head for somewhere that is famous for football either. The island of Madeira for example isn’t known for housing one of the powerhouse clubs but is the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo and houses a museum dedicated to the Juventus forward.
If you want to book a city break during the coming season around a big match in one of the big European cities then give us a call…
Golf:
Perhaps one of the top sports that people head overseas to enjoy themselves is golf, and you only have to see some of the options that are available to players to see why.
Whilst there are plenty of top quality courses on British shores, there is something special about the chance to tee off in picturesque surroundings whilst the sun beats down before heading for the pool or the beach later in the day to relax.
The Algarve is one area that is particularly popular with Brits who want to enjoy a golf break overseas but is far from the only option, with the likes of Spain, the Canary Islands and France also well worth considering if you only want to go short haul.
Head further afield and you open up the opportunity to sample some of the best courses in the USA, the Far East, the Caribbean and Australia – the choice really is yours…

Motorsport:
Motor Racing is another global sport that you can easily factor in to your annual holiday, with big name races taking place around the world every.
If you love the glitz and glamour that comes with Formula 1 then you might like the idea of a spending a weekend in Monte Carlo when the Grand Prix is in town, or might fancy booking a trip to Barcelona when the Spanish GP is on down the road at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Heading further afield, the bright lights of Singapore or Abu Dhabi are well worth a visit in their own right – but even more so when you could also add in a trip to one of the flyaway events towards the end of the season.
A motorsport themed trip doesn’t have to focus on F1 however. You might fancy a trip to France during the Le Mans 24 Hours or fancy taking a break in the USA during the month of May when the Indianapolis 500 is in full swing.
Alternatively, there is the chance for two-wheeled fans to follow MotoGP or World Superbikes to the far-flung corners of the globe.
